Senior Squad

Interested in joining a club which was described as “one of the great bastions of northern rowing” at Head of the River Race 2023? Then look no further than the Senior Squad at Warrington Rowing Club!

The Senior Squad formed in September 2022 following increased demand from senior rowers wishing to join the club, a trend which has continued since. The squad has dedicated coaching and consists of members who have completed the L2R course and are new to rowing, experienced rowers who have been rowing for many years and former rowers wishing to pick the sport back up again. We also have students who come and train with us during university holidays.

As the squad has increased, so have our ambitions as we aim to compete at more and more competitive events across the UK each year. In March 2022, the senior men raced at Head of the River Race for the first time in over 20 years, achieving the highest finish position in the club’s history. In 2023, we raced HORR again, improving upon the previous year’s result. In June 2024, the senior women qualified a double for the Aspirational Double Sculls event at Henley Women’s Regatta. Later in the summer, the senior women won bronze at Senior National Championships in the women’s club quadruple sculls event. Future ambitions for the squad include racing at Women’s Head of the River Race, qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta, qualifying more crews for Henley Women’s Regatta and further success at Senior National Championships

The squad offers a competitive training programme combined with dedicated coaching for those wishing to push themselves. However, we also ensure flexibility is factored into training to ensure that members can balance the demands of everyday life, such as work and family responsibilities. During winter, training consists of four sessions a week: two ergo and gym sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday evening and two water sessions on a Saturday and Sunday morning. During the summer months, the Tuesday and Thursday sessions switch to water sessions and a Wednesday evening gym session is added into the programme. Early morning erg sessions on a Wednesday are available throughout the year. There is an expectation for those wanting to follow a more competitive training programme to train in addition to this in their own time, or at the club where possible. We also cater for those who wish to take a more relaxed approach to rowing, allowing them to structure their training to meet their needs and offering coaching where possible.

It’s not all about rowing though! The Senior Squad is a very close knit and social group of people with some members having been with the club for many years and we feel this is something that helps us stand out. There are regular socials held throughout the year, both as a squad and as a club, such as the annual dinner in September and the Christmas Party!

So, if you would like to join the Senior Squad at Warrington Rowing and have the opportunity to train on over 5km of uninterrupted water, email warringtonrowingclub@gmail.com to be put in contact with the Senior Vice Captain or send us a DM on our socials!
